Small restoration at upper right. The upper left corner is missing, small holes at right edge.

Work of prestigious provenance, coming directly from the Cosattini Family of Udine: it was owned by the lawyer Giovanni Cosattini (1878–1954), a socialist deputy, friend of Giacomo Matteotti, opponent of Fascism, mayor of the Liberation, and finally Senator of the Republic. His five children (two sons and three daughters), born from his marriage to Renza Cuoghi, were each protagonists of remarkable stories. The eldest son, Luigi, a professor of civil law, was among the founders of the Action Party in Veneto; deported to Buchenwald, he died in Germany during a tragic escape attempt. The other son, Alberto, a lawyer and also an Action Party militant, became Ferruccio Parri's right-hand man in Milan during the crucial 1944–45 period, and later his private secretary during the first post-Liberation government. The three daughters married prominent figures of the anti-fascist movement: Emilia married Gustavo Volterra, an executive at RAS and son of the mathematician Vito Volterra—one of the very few university professors who, in 1931, refused the oath of allegiance imposed by the regime; Giovanna wed the Turinese engineer Enrico Carrara, son of Professor Mario Carrara (Lombroso’s son-in-law), another 'non-swearing' professor; finally, Emma was the wife of Giovanni Enriques, an Olivetti executive active in the Resistance (cf. Sandro Gerbi, I Cosattini. Una famiglia antifascista di Udine, Milan, Hoepli, 2016)."

For the painter from Ampezzo, the Carnic Alps were a familiar place with which he had established a serene and harmonious relationship. His paintings feature primarily the mountainous landscape, its ancient houses, and the rural farming practices of its people. This exquisite work fits perfectly into this context. In 1927, he participated with this painting in the "Landscape Art Exhibition" in Bologna and in 1929 in the "Mountain Art Exhibition" in Milan. In the typically Carnic landscape, the figure of the peasant woman is striking, symbolizing the work and toil of women in Carnia. The colors of her blue apron, with her white blouse, seem to materialize a shimmering ray that runs throughout the work, as Licio Damiani recalls. Formerly part of the collection of art critic and historian Tiziano Dalla Marta, it is now owned by a collector from Udine.

The work was exhibited at Ca' Pesaro in Venice in 1910 and 1911. It has had several solo and group exhibitions over time. This work successfully sums up the artistic journey of the Carnia painter. The composition focuses on the female figure in the background, animated by the contrast between the white snow and the brown houses, through which the warm glow of the "fogolar" fire can be glimpsed, all surrounded by the blue mountains and a cloud-filled sky in the background. In this work D'Avanzo finds the most salient aspects of his beloved Carnia. From a well-known collector. Period label "Stabilimento Tipografico Carnia, Tolmezzo" on the back.

Masterpiece work by Marco Davanzo in which he has put all his talent born from the training of the masters of the Venetian school such as Ettore Tito and Pietro Fragiacomo. The work is a primary example of his affection and bond towards his homeland, with the relationship that binds the man from the mountains to his land, Ampezzo and the Alta Val Tagliamento, portrayed with poetry and magic enhanced by his synthetic brush strokes that reveal all their richness in brightness and color. Work of high poetic and emotional tone by the artist from Carnia with this Scene focused on daily and domestic life in the mountain landscape of the snowy Alta Val Tagliamento where time seems to pass slowly....

The Canvas shows signs of aging.
