Rare work by Domenico Failutti

Domenico Failutti was born in Zugliano, a hamlet of Pozzuolo del Friuli. He was a student at the School of Drawing of the Workers' Society of Udine. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice where he has Ettore Tito and Antonio Dalzotto as teachers, developing a classical style and, thanks to the influence of Ettore Tito, a strong predilection for almost photographic portrait painting. In Florence he studied sculpture, decorative and plastic art. In the early years he devoted himself to teaching and sacred painting which he combined with portraiture in which he excelled. In 1902 he decorated the church of Buttrio. He was an itinerant painter. He lived in Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade and was court painter of the royal family of Montenegro in Cettigne. He travelled to the United States, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela and Brazil[1] and wherever he went his portraits always met with great success. He portrayed four popes including Benedict XV
