The artwork was formerly in the artist's personal collection, acquired directly by the current owner, a well-known art collector from Udine. Work was displayed in 1963 in Udine at the exhibition 'Esposizione del ciclo Paese perduto', and in the same year, at the 'Galleria Il Camino' in Pordenone. In 1965, it was exposed at the 'Galleria Stendhal' in Milan, and after at the IX Quadriennale of Rome. The relationship between Ciussi and Santomaso was far more than a mere artistic acquaintance; it was an intellectual dialogue and a mutual mentorship that played a decisive role in the evolution of Ciussi's painting. Their friendship deepened in the early 1960s. According to the Carlo Ciussi Archive, in 1962 Santomaso spent several months in Udine alongside Ciussi, and from this close association, the pictorial cycle Paese perduto (Lost Country) was born. This work belongs to that very cycle and is considered 'fundamental' by critics. Scholars emphasize that in this piece, Ciussi assimilated certain aspects of Santomaso's Venetian Informal art before rapidly developing an autonomous language. During those years, Ciussi transitioned from Expressionist and Neo-Cubist influences toward an increasingly abstract and personal style, which gained national recognition. The artwork was exhibited in 1963 in Udine at the Esposizione del ciclo Paese perduto, and in the same year, at the Galleria Il Camino in Pordenone. In 1965, it was shown first at the Galleria Stendhal in Milan, and subsequently at the IX Quadriennale di Roma. Works from 1962/63 are particularly sought-after and nearly impossible to find, as they document the crucial transition that would lead Ciussi to the 1964 Venice Biennale.

An artwork of historical and critical interest, Bricco e porri (Jug and Leeks) belongs to a significant phase in the artist's career: the two-year period between 1960 and 1962, during which the Friulian painter underwent his radical stylistic metamorphosis, progressively abandoning figuration to embrace Informal Abstraction. It was no coincidence that still life was the genre that marked the turning point in Ciussi's artistic journey in 1960. It was precisely through this traditional subject that the artist began to dismantle figurative language, moving toward the essential. In this sense, Bricco e porri is not merely a transitional painting, but a direct testament to that process of expressive liberation that would lead Ciussi, in the years immediately following, to a fully Informal style—a development also nurtured by his fundamental artistic partnership with Giuseppe Santomaso, a key figure in the Venetian art scene and a leading protagonist of Italian Informal Art. An artwork of superb quality, highly sought-after by the collector market.

A work of rare figurative quality, it reveals one of the least explored and most precious aspects of Carlo Ciussi's production: the return to the human figure, treated with the same expressive power and mastery of line that characterize his entire artistic research.

Over the 1960-62 period, Carlo Ciussi gradually transitioned from figurative to abstract art . The partnership with Giuseppe Santomaso had a notable impact on the development of his art expressed in informal terms. However, in the following Il Paese perduto (The Lost village) cycle in 1963 the black signs of informel art are replaced by geometric elements, in particular squares that alternate with circles. This cycle of works marked a crucial turning point in his artistic research and the following year he took part in the 1964 Biennal exhibiting five works.
