The first thing that strikes the viewer in this precious work is the total absence of idealization. The face on the right appears hollowed out, almost consumed by time, built with a few nervous and incisive marks. The face emerges from the void. The lines are rapid and restless: they describe not just a person, but the very process of memory. The greenish-yellow patch behind the figure introduces a dreamlike, mental dimension rather than a naturalistic one. 'Knowing Zigaina's poetics of the 1970s, what this work conveys most is the persistence of an absent presence. Not the father as a portrait, but the father as an inner image that continues to live in the son's dream and memory.' From the critics: '...from a collecting perspective, while the market focuses primarily on oils and major works, many scholars consider these mixed media works on paper from the 1970s among the artist's most intimate and revealing testaments. They often tell much more about his interiority than his large, official works do.' This work by Zigaina perfectly represents the strength of his mark. A unique artwork of unquestionable value.

An emblematic work from the Informal and textural phase that Zigaina experienced in the early 1960s, this oil on canvas reveals the full expressive maturity achieved by the Friulian artist at the time of his greatest international recognition—the very years in which he participated in the 1960 'XXX Venice Biennale'. The subject, though not traceable to an explicit figuration, evokes ambiguous presences—collapsing architectures, memories of landscapes, forms emerging and dissolving—in perfect coherence with that dimension Zigaina himself defined as 'another part of reality,' filtered through the sediments of a deeper and more personal history.
